Magdalenen Kirche (Magdalene Church) - A lovely church in Meggen, Switzerland

Magdalenen Kirche or Magdalene Church, located in the town of Meggen in Switzerland, was built in the year 1776/77 and has been an active place of worship since then. However, the church is believed to have existed at the same site from the medieval times, and another building might have been here from as far back as the 12th Century. Very little documentary evidence exists from the era though, and nothing is conclusive on this front.

The church was not at all a part of my itinerary in Switzerland and we stopped close to it only because of the parking there where we needed to take a halt. As everyone else got busy with setting their cameras, Deeba and I got really curious about the lovely graves at the graveyard. Strangely, just like me, Deeba was also quite interested in graves and we both got busy checking the dates on these graves, many were as old as the beginning of the past century and I was really intrigued by them all. My fascination was not morbid, but it was completely about the history and stories of the people who were buried there.

I love looking at these numbers - remembering a lifetime

There was just one person who was cleaning the place and he was quite friendly and even posed for Deeba. We still had a few more minutes and I was curious to see the interiors, so decided to take a quick peek into the church. The main image at the altar, "The Descent from the Cross" by Josef Keller from the Allgäu and been the central attraction of the church from the time it was built. I gazed at it for a while, sat for a short prayer and then it was time to leave again.

It was certainly one of the shortest visits to a Church but within this half an hours, I was quite mesmerised about it. Sometimes, it’s these tiny visits which make an impact, and I can’t even explain why :)

If you are in lovely Lucerne, and have some time, this church is certainly worth a visit. Here is the address:

I was in Switzerland in August, but there was just too hot to move anywhere :) (I was visiting my daughter, who lives in Reide).
Last year I went to Lucerne and I'll put this place to my mind for my next visit.
